About

The Gallery

The Gallery, London

The Gallery was conceived in 2004 in the central Plateau of Central Mexico in a town called San Miguel de Allende. Since then the gallery has had quite an evolution from representing many artists to concentrating exclusively on Michael French. The Gallery curated many exhibitions in San Miguel, México such as exhibitions of marvelous Croatian hyper realist, Zvonimir Mihanović and the iconic New York photographer and close friend of Andy Warhol’s, Cris Alexander. In 2007, The Gallery was originally called Whitfield Gallery and it had a focus on curating international exhibitions, working in conjunction with Michael French in exhibitions such as his Forbes museum show New York in 2008. Originally, Whitfield gallery was run by Veronica Ramirez, Erika Ramirez and James Whitfield, Michael’s longtime agent and friend in New York. James unfortunately passed on. The gallery is located in the central, West London in Marylebone.

Erika Ramirez has been working with Michael in different capacities such as assistant and sales and in the gallery business for 21 years. As well as being director of Whitfield gallery in three different locations she hosted all of Michael’s exhibitions from 2003 until 2020 including the prestigious exhibition Michael had in the exclusive Club 51 in Mexico City in 2020. Erika was with Michael most of the time when he was doing trips for inspiration for future subjects for upcoming exhibitions. Michael has painted Erika five times. He has also painted other members of family including Sophia and Amelia. It is often hard to separate an artist’s life from his work and inspiration. Erika also manages so many of Michael’s business activities such as hosting important clients and the day to day details of running the business side of things.

Andre Van Hese and the Diplomat Treasures International Gallery

Andre Van Hese is a contemporary and classic art dealer and is the owner and curator of Diplomat Treasures International gallery.   Andre, the son of a diplomat grew up living in countries all over the world and was exposed to their culture and art at a very young age. He acquired his first painting when he was 6 years old and his first coin from his grandmother when he was 7. He has been collecting all his life and the gallery grew out of his passion for art. The gallery is also called the Iconic Art Gallery because Andre has specialized and developed an expertise as well as a passion in collecting and selling large numbers of Russian and Greek icons over the years.

Andre and Michael met when Andre was in Toronto, Canada at an exhibition of Michaels work in what was then the Kinsman Robinson Gallery. He became passionate about Michaels paintings immediately and asked Michael to work with him and join the gallery as one of their artists. In the future Michael and Andre have planned exhibitions together such as in the gallery in the fall of 2023 and at Art Basel and Basel Miami in the years to come.

The gallery has an eclectic collection of modern paintings including hyper realism, graffiti art, classic paintings, original and limited editions, ranging from urban prints to Chinese jades, Japanese Netsuke and  Okimono, Chinese jades and ceramics, coins, as well as Orthodox icons that have been lovingly sourced from collectors around the world. Diplomat Treasures International, as the name suggests, is the creation of a large collection of paintings and wonderful objects that have been passionately collected over time. Andre Van Hese’s curatorial savvy as a collector is not just based on passion, it is also based on his accumulated lifetime knowledge from his travels and hands on approach to collecting that only a collector with a vast amount of experience, obtained over many years, could accumulate.

The gallery is situated within the famous Alfies Antiques Market on Church Street in Marylebone, in a walking district of North London and is open to anyone from collector or those simply wishing to browse. It is open from 10AM – 6PM Tuesday to Saturday.
