From 1972 to 1985 , Michael homesteaded in Newfoundland to perfect his painting technique. He was self sufficient, growing, fishing and hunting for his own food . Michael lived alone in the isolated wilderness , beside the ocean 50 kilometers from the end of the road. His days were divided between survival chores and painting. In 1975 Michael built his own home in Great Garvais which was essential for Michael´s painting development where he was confronted by the overwhelming beauty of the powerful ocean and the wilderness. Michael used to fly into the country from his home for subject material.Over the years he owned two bush planes.
